Artist Biography
Robert Ellis is an Irish photographer and educator based in Dublin. His practice critically examines how meaning and representation are constructed, moving from an interrogation of documentary photography towards a more personal and affective mode of image-making within a research-led practice. Across this trajectory, his work is shaped by sustained enquiry into photography as a mediated and contingent form.
Ellis has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Changing States: Ireland in the 21st Century (Berlin, 2024) and Modern Nature as part of Cairde Arts Festival, Sligo. Solo exhibitions include Matthis Gallery (USA), RUA Red (Dublin), Belfast Exposed Gallery, and Peckham 24 as part of Photo London.
His work has been featured by The British Journal of Photography, FlakPhoto, and This is Paper, and is held in public and private collections including the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. In 2014, he was selected for Plat(t)form at Fotomuseum Winterthur. Alongside his practice, Ellis lectures in photography at Griffith College and the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.
